Gielis (Gilles, Jelis) Mattysz (Matthijsz), an Anabaptist martyr, a surgeon at Middelburg, Dutch province of Zeeland, who was put to death there with Willeboort Cornelisz on 26 October 1564. He said he lay imprisoned over two years. The execution took place at night for fear of the populace. The Offer des Heeren and van Braght print three of his letters. One is addressed to the congregation whose pastor he was. It is a pastoral letter of unusual beauty, urging his members to be faithful and walk uprightly. The others were written to his wife, to comfort her and encourage her to have patience and perseverance in a pious life, well-pleasing to God. The Offer des Heeren celebrates him in a song, "Mijn jock is soet, mijn last is licht" (eight stanzas).
