Gesangbuch zum gottesdienstlichen und häuslichen Gebrauch in Evangelischen Mennoniten-Gemeinden (Worms: Buckdruckerei von A.K. Boeninger, 1856, viii, 610 pp) was the hymnbook of the conference of South German Mennonites which was prepared with the cooperation of A. Knapp.
A second „unchanged“ edition (Zweite unveränderte Auflage) followed in 1876 (Kaiserslautern: In Commission bei Carl Gotthold, 1876, viii, 619 pp). Both the first and second editions had 600 hymns and included an appendix of prayers and indexes. There was an author index, a melody index and a title index. The second edition also included an index to scriptural allusions which was not in the first edition. The second edition was printed by the Pfalzischen Post under the direction of J.B. Hoffman in 1876, and at least one printing under the direction of M. Blenk, with no printing year given (Kaiserslautern, Aug. Gotthold’s Verlagsbuchhandlung, 18??, viii, 619 pp).
The third edition was revised and appeared with 575 hymns, with closed scores for some hymns (Ludwigshafen: Konferenz der süddeutschen Mennoniten, 1910, viii, 573 pp). A fourth edition appeared in 1950 at Ludwigshafen, which was unchanged (4.unveränderte Auflage).
In 1873 the General Conference Mennonite Church of North America reprinted the songbook adding 22 songs and dropping the word "Evangelischen" in the title and the appendixes. In 1890 a considerably revised edition of this book was published under the title, Gesangbuch mit Noten, which experienced 15 editions (50,000 copies) between 1890 and 1936, when it was replaced by the Gesangbuch der Mennoniten (1942) and English-language hymnals.
