General Sunday School Committee of the Mennonite Church

The General Sunday School Committee of the Mennonite Church was created in 1915 by the Mennonite General Conference to supervise, coordinate, and strengthen the Sunday-school work of the church. It was discontinued in 1937 when its work was taken over by the newly created Commission for Christian Education and Young People's Work. In addition to its general promotional work the committee was given general charge of the editorial work on the Sunday-school literature of the church and for this purpose chose (subject to General Conference approval) a General Sunday School Editor and an Associate Sunday School Editor. It therefore of necessity worked in close relationship with the Mennonite Publication Board. In this connection it also served as the general planning agency and curriculum builder for the Sunday-school literature. For its promotional work it had a General Sunday School Secretary. The committee had six regular members elected for a six-year term, but in addition gradually developed a series of seven subcommittees with co-opted members. I. W. Royer served as General Sunday School Secretary throughout the life of the committee. J. A. Ressler served as General Sunday School Editor from the beginning until his death in 1936. Influential chairmen were Vernon Smucker and Noah Oyer.
