Gellius Snecanus (d. ca. 1600)
Gellius Snecanus, the "Reformer" of Friesland, was a priest at Niekerk, and after 1565 Reformed preacher at Leeuwarden, d. about 1600. He was a violent opponent of the Anabaptists and published against them the Latin polemic Methodica descriptio (Leiden, 1584), which was translated into Dutch in 1588 with the title, Ordentlijcke beschryvinge ende fondament van dry gemeyne plaetsen der H. Schrift. The synod of Bolsward meeting in 1588 commissioned him to investigate Menno Simons' Fundamentboek (see Foundation Book). The consequence was that some group had the original edition of the Fundamentboek reprinted in order to show that the revised edition of 1558 (?) omitted certain statements about the Münsterites.
