Gateway Christian Fellowship began in September 2000, through the efforts of eight Mennonite Brethren congregations in the Niagara Peninsula of Ontario, Canada. It wished to appeal to those suspicious of institutionalized religion, yet open to spirituality. A small group of individuals started meeting at Lakeport Secondary School in St. Catharines, then also the location of Eden High School. Ed and Karin Willms, part of the group of church planters, took on the role of lead pastoral couple. They continued to lead the church throughout its 10 year existence.

The vision and mission statement of the church were to be a church of passionate Christ followers who could grow and care for one another while experiencing an intimate relationship with God. Gateway Christian Fellowship eventually merged with Southridge Community Church on 1 January 2010, and became the North End campus of this multi-site church.
