<p><b>New page</b></p><div>Katharina Schierling Friesen: pioneer, was born on 7 June 1823 to Durk and Katharina Schierling in [[Mariental (Molotschna Mennonite Settlement, Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine)|Mariental]], [[Molotschna Mennonite Settlement (Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine)|Molotschna Colony]], [[Russia|Russia]]. She was the second of five children. Katharina was baptized in 1841 in Russia. On 14 December 1846, she married Jakob K. Friesen (1822-1875) of Ohrloff, Molotschna. The couple lived in [[Mariental (Molotschna Mennonite Settlement, Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine)|Mariental]], [[Alexanderkrone (Molotschna Mennonite Settlement, Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine)|Alexanderkrone]], [[Klippenfeld (Molotschna Mennonite Settlement, Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine)|Klippenfeld]], and [[Nikolaital (Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine)|Nikolaital]], in South Russia. They had seven children, all of whom survived childhood. Together with other families from the Mennonite [[Kleine Gemeinde|Kleine Gemeinde]], the Friesens immigrated to [[Canada|Canada]] in 1874.<br />
