Friesen, Katharina Schierling (1823-1912)
Katharina Schierling Friesen: pioneer, was born on 7 June 1823 to Durk and Katharina Schierling in Mariental, Molotschna Colony, Russia. She was the second of five children. Katharina was baptized in 1841 in Russia. On 14 December 1846, she married Jakob K. Friesen (1822-1875) of Ohrloff, Molotschna. The couple lived in Mariental, Alexanderkrone, Klippenfeld, and Nikolaital, in South Russia. They had seven children, all of whom survived childhood. Together with other families from the Mennonite Kleine Gemeinde, the Friesens immigrated to Canada in 1874.
Katharina Friesen suffered injuries during the voyage from Russia which later forced her to walk with crutches or a cane. Her husband drowned a year after their arrival in Canada, on 3 June 1875, while trying to cross the Red River on his way to Winnipeg. Katharine and her children lived in Steinbach, Manitoba following his death. She died on 9 October 1912 at the home of a daughter in Blumenhof, Manitoba.
