Franz, Johann Friedrich (18th/19th century)

Johann Friedrich Franz, Reformed clergyman at Lichtenberg in the canton of St. Gall, Switzerland, in 1824 at Mogelsberg in the same canton, wrote the book, Die schwärmerischen Greuelszenen der St. Galler Wiedertäufer zu Anfang der Reformation . . . aus den Original-Handschriften Joh. Kesslers (Ebnat, 1824). Franz was induced by libertinistic movements to produce this book, which follows Kessler closely, and which has been superseded by recent research. The material he presents apart from Kessler is inferior; as his sources he mentions Vadian, Zwingli, Ottius, etc. In support of his anti-Anabaptist prejudice he adds "Blicke auf das Leben einiger Widertäufer," and in conclusion he reprints the "Abschid der Stette Zürich, Bern und St. Gallen von wegen der Wiedergetauften," of 7 September 1527.
