In late 1986 Allan Roth and family moved to Brooklyn, New York, USA to help establish a church. After numerous difficulties on 23 April 1989, 17 people signed a chartering statement that officially marked the beginning of the Followers of Jesus Mennonite Church.

For several years, this group met in the basement of 51 Logan Street. They then moved to the basement of the Andrews United Methodist Church at 93 Richmond Street. In 1996 the church began meeting at the North Brooklyn YMCA at 570 Jamaica Avenue. In August 1999, the church and school began leasing space at 3065 Atlantic Avenue. They purchased the property in 2004.

The church had been a member of the Conservative Mennonite Conference before leaving that conference and becoming a charter member of the Biblical Mennonite Alliance in February 1999.

In 2019 the leading minister was Jonathan Kulp. The congregational membership was 45 and the average weekly attendance was 75.
