Erb Street Mennonite Church began services in 1837, and formally organized in 1851. The first building was occupied in 1851, with subsequent building programs in 1902, 1950 and 1980. David Eby is considered the founding leader of the group. The congregation originated through immigration from Pennsylvania. The early settlers included David Eby, Jonas Bingeman and Samuel Schantz.

Erb St. was originally known as the David Eby church, and later the Waterloo Church. Ministers prior to 1950 included Elias Schneider, Jonas Snider, Noah Hunsberger, Newton Weber and Jesse B. Martin. The language of worship is English; the transition from German occurred in the first decade of the 20th century.

Pastors Renee Sauder and Allan Rudy-Froese served in 2001 as congregational leaders.
