Edgewood Old Order Amish Settlement (Edgewood, Iowa, USA)
The Edgewood Old Order Amish settlement in Clayton County, Iowa, USA began in spring 1986 when four families from the Hazleton, Iowa settlement moved to an area called Bear Creek Valley between Edgewood and Elkport, Iowa. The group included minister Dannie U. Gingerich and deacon Ura E. Gingerich.
The impetus for the settlement was lower land prices. The first settlers paid $500 per acre, by 2008 the values had increased to $5,000 per acre.
In 2008 the Edgewood settlement included 62 families in three districts (congregations). Thirty-eight families were dairy farmers, though all but three of these were goat dairy farmers. The community also included a pallet shop, two sawmills, two harness shops, four furniture shops, one log furniture shop, two bulk food stores, one dry goods variety store, one buggy repair, one bakery, and a variety of construction teams.
