Doerksen, Gerhard B. (1825-1882)
Gerhard B. Doerksen, a village teacher skilled in the art of Fraktur, was born 20 May 1825 to Bernhard Doerksen (1797-1874) and Maria Braun (1804-1845) who had emigrated from West Prussia in 1819 to settle in the village of Fischau, which was part of the Molotschna colony in southern Russia. Gerhard grew up in Fischau where he eventually became the village teacher. He married Helena Dick (1832-1910) 15 January 1853. In 1874, Gerhard and his family immigrated to Hochstadt, Manitoba.
Gerhard began writing a Rechen Buch (Math text) in 1844, which he completed in 1849. This text, in addition to the mathematical information it contained, also illustrated Gerhard's artistic ability in the ornamentation of its cover and title pages.
Gerhard B. Doerksen, a dedicated teacher and father, died following a stroke 15 December 1882.
