Dieuwertgen (d. 1552)
Dieuwertgen (Dieuwerken Jansdochter), an Anabaptist martyr, was sentenced to die by being buried alive with a brother and two sisters after cruel torture at Leiden (Holland) on 21 August 1552 (erroneously given as 1550 in the Martyrs' Mirror). When she was led to the site of execution she began to sing and then said, "Dear brethren, do not avenge me for this; for it is for the sake of the Lord." Her martyrdom is sung in the hymn, "Eylaes ick mach wel suchten," written by Adriaen Cornelisz.
