Henry Davidson (1823-1903): Brethren in Christ bishop and influential churchman who made major contributions in publication and foreign missions. He was born in Pennsylvania and ordained to the ministry at the age of 23. He moved several times, living in Ohio, Michigan, Kansas, and Pennsylvania, and in each location actively served the church. He was frequently chosen as moderator or assistant moderator of General Conference and served on such important boards as the Publication Board and the Mission Board. He was the chief mover in the Brethren in Christ decision to publish its own paper, the Evangelical Visitor, and was the paper's first editor (1887-96). As editor he sought to move the denomination in new ways in keeping with the Brethren heritage. He emphasized missions, Sunday schools, and higher education. He was chairman of the mission board when the decision was made to undertake overseas work. The first person to volunteer was his daughter, H. Frances Davidson.
