Daming (Taming) Mennonite (General Conference Mennonite) Mission. Daming is the largest city (pop. 50,000 in 1959) in the southern tip of Hebei (Ho-pei) Province, and the political, educational, and commercial center of that area, county seat of Daming Xian (County) (pop. ca. 520,000 in 1959; 713,584 in 2000). Missionaries of three Protestant denominations, as well as one independent worker, were located in this city or its suburbs. Those of the General Conference Mennonite Church lived in the city and the south suburb. The Mennonite work had started farther south with center at Kaichow. In 1920 the mission expanded to the north, occupying Taming as a second center. Two missionary residences and buildings for a primary and junior high school were erected in the south suburb compound of 8 ½ acres. In this city a large church seating 1,000 and a lower primary school were built. Chinese buildings were remodeled for a missionary residence, a dispensary, and 10 homes for Chinese workers. In a south suburb compound near the city a street chapel and a Young Women's Home Training and Bible School were built. The normal missionary staff was two families and two or three single women. Growing Chinese participation gave rise about 1928 to an indigenous movement known as the "Society to Prepare for Church Independence." It was responsible for starting three churches and several preaching places with local workers and funds. In 1939 the society was absorbed in an all-field church organization. All missionaries left or were interned during World War II and never returned because of Communist occupation, but the Chinese church has continued active.
