Van Dühren (von Dühren, von Düren, von Dihren, Dieren) is one of the oldest of the Dutch Mennonite families who immigrated into Prussia. Most of the van Dührens lived in Danzig and were numerous in the Mennonite congregation there; formerly there were also some in Königsberg and Elbing. Hendrik van Dühren served as elder of the Frisian church on Neugarten in Danzig, 1676-1694; his oldest son Albrecht succeeded him until 1696, and after his untimely death the younger son Hendrik (or Heinrich) served, 1701-1746. During the eldership of this Hendrik van Dühren a number of difficulties arose in the congregation, mostly caused, or at least aggravated, by his obstinacy and extreme conservatism. In 1739 he refused to ordain Johan Donner, who had been chosen as elder. Finally two elders from Holland, Abraham Koenen and Jacob Ouwejans, in 1740-1741, succeeded in settling the quarrels. Other members of the family have served as preachers (e.g., Isaac van Dühren) and on the council. The name did not spread beyond Berlin and Prussia. Heinrich van Dühren (d. 1945) was president of the Berlin Mennonite Church and a judge in the Prussian courts.
