The congregation began services in 1985, and formally organized in 1986. Dave Traub and Ernie Isaac are considered the founding leaders of the group, with Traub serving as pastor from 1986 to 1987. The congregation originated through outreach by Willingdon Mennonite Brethren Church and the British Columbia Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches, which it joined in 1987.

Cornerstone amalgamated with Fleetwood Community Church which began in 1993.

In the spring of 2003 the congregation merged with former members of Kennedy Heights Mennonite Brethren Church to form New Hope Christian Church. The new congregation met in the former Kennedy Heights sanctuary and was led by Cornerstone's pastor, Michael Brown.
