Christlicher Dienst (Christian Service or Voluntary Service) is an organization among the Mennonite colonies in Paraguay, to provide service for young people outside the colonies on the same basis as Voluntary Service does in North America. Each colony is to have a Christian Service Committee, with the Fernheim Colony committee serving as the general coordinating committee and Martin Durksen of Buenos Aires appointed by the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) to serve as liaison and promoter. The first unit, located at the Paraguayan government mental hospital at Asunción, began in February 1957, where a team of two workers is maintained. Another unit is at the MCC Leprosy project in East Paraguay. Two additional programs opened in 1958 include a government Tuberculosis sanatorium and a Salvation Army Children's Home. The name Christlicher Dienst emphasizes the Christian character of the service and candidates are carefully chosen from this point of view.
