Canelones (Uruguay)
Canelones, Uruguay is a town 34 miles (55 km) north of Montevideo in an area that was the most highly developed in fruit growing and dairying in all Uruguay. Near Canelones six Mennonite families were living in 1950, on a plot originally intended for 42 families; but because of differences in opinion on such matters as the terms for repayment of the purchase price of the land and the internal government of the future colony, most of the original group looked elsewhere for opportunity. The main undertaking at Canelones was dairying, with hog raising and truck gardening as side lines.
