Buyser, Jan de (17th century)
Jan de Buyser, a native of the Netherlands, probably from Amsterdam, was a minister of the Flemish congregation of the Huiskoopers at Hamburg-Altona shortly after 1640, which congregation he served until 1670. He wrote Christelijck Huys-boeck ende het eendrachligh gheluyt in de Geestelijcken Tempel Salomons, oft Gemeeynte Jesu Christi (Christian House-Book, and the Harmonious Peal in the Spiritual Temple of Solomon, or the Church of Jesus Christ), printed at Hoorn in 1643. It consists of a collection of writings by various Mennonite authors and is intended for family reading. The Huys-boeck is a large volume of 980 pages. The first part (pp. 1-625) contains 12 articles of faith on which the author comments with quotations from the works of Menno Simons, Dirk Philips, Vincent de Hondt, and other influential Mennonite authors. The second part (pp. 627-821) is taken up with a "Further Explanation" (Naerder Verklaringhe) of the above articles, while in the third part of this book (pp. 823-980), called "Necessary Instruction" (Hoogh-noodige Vertooninge), the author provides still another commentary on some of the articles of faith.
Besides the Huys-boeck de Buyser also published Christi Hemelvaert (The Ascension of Christ), which seems to have been lost, and Naerder verklaringe over mijn klein Boeckjen ghetytuleert "Christi Hemelvaert" (Altona, 1664). His Christelijck Huys-boeck was written as a devotional and doctrinal reader for his own group, the Dutch-speaking Huiskoopers.
