Board of Christian Service (General Conference Mennonite Church)
The Board of Christian Service (General Conference Mennonite) was created when a new constitution of the General Conference Mennonite Church was adopted at its thirty-second session at Freeman, South Dakota, in August 1950.
This board was charged with all responsibilities of the conference in the broad areas of relief, peace, and mutual aid. It consisted of 12 members, four of whom were elected at each regular session of the conference. The board organized its work under various divisions which were responsible to the board. The Committee on Hospitals and Relief carried the administrative responsibilities for the interests of the conference in the field of relief, the work of hospitals, the homes for the aged and care of the orphans (see Emergency Relief Board of GCM). The Committee on Mutual Aid provided a service of counseling and guidance, promotes colonization efforts, and was authorized to receive and solicit funds for loans to persons needing help (for more information see Mutual Aid Board of General Conference Mennonite Church). The Committee on Peace Service carried responsibilities for the conference in regard to a program of Christian peace education and witnessing in the congregations of the conference and beyond (for more information see Peace Committee of General Conference Mennonite Church).
The Board of Christian Service had a full-time secretary with an office in the General Conference Headquarters, 722 Main St., Newton, Kansas. A subsequent constitutional change in 1968 saw the some of the work of this board carried by a new Commission on Education.
