Bethany Theological Seminary (known as Bethany Biblical Seminary until 1963), was established at Chicago, Illinois in 1905. It is the official theological seminary of the Church of the Brethren. In 1945 the General Conference Mennonite Church authorized a school to be known as Mennonite Biblical Seminary and to operate in affiliation with Bethany Biblical Seminary. Each of the affiliated schools had its own directors, constituency, buildings, faculty members, and students. Affiliation was at the level of instruction. Interschool relations were maintained where interests overlapped, but at the same time full opportunity was given for attention to individual interest. In the 1951-52 school year the total enrollment in the affiliated schools was 269, of which the Mennonites provided 44. In 1958 Mennonite Biblical Seminary relocated to Elkhart, Indiana and began an association with Goshen Biblical Seminary, that led to the formation of the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries

In 1957, the Bethany Biblical Seminary Board of Trustees approved the relocation of the seminary to an area near the city of Oak Brook, Illinois. In 1992 Bethany Theological Seminary leadership decided they needed to relocate to a more economically feasible campus, and in 1994 the school began sharing the campus of Earlham School of Religion in Richmond, Indiana. Since the greatest percentage of Brethren live near Pennsylvania, the Seminary opened an off-site extension program known as the Susquehanna Valley Satellite on the campus of Elizabethtown College in October 1993.
