Bastiaen, an Anabaptist martyr, remained true to his faith and was put to death on 15 August 1561, at Antwerp, according to the Martyrs' Mirror, together with Jan, Hendrik, Hans, Lijntgen, Mariken van Meenen, and Beetken van Brugh. These martyrs were commemorated in the song, "Lieve Broeders, ick groet u met sanghen" (Dear brethren, I greet you with songs), found in the Tweede Liedtboeck (1562), and included in Wackernagel, Lieder. P. Genard, Antwerpsch archievenblad XIV, 30-33, does not mention him. He did not find a sentence for 15 August 1561. During the years 1561-1562 there is listed only one Bastiaen, viz., Bastiaen de Pottere (No. 359), who was executed between 26 June and 4 September 1562, suspected of Anabaptism; but this Bastiaen de Pottere was released. It is hardly possible that this Bastiaen is to be identified with the above martyr. The point is not clear, the more so since the Martyrs Mirror is not correct in the date of the execution; evidently its source is this song, which puts the death of all these martyrs on one day, whereas in fact Jan (Jan van Lyere) was put to death on 5 September 1561; Hendrik (H. van Dale) 3 April 1562; Hans, 3 October 1562; Lijntgen (Lijnken van Dale) 13 November 1562; Mariken van Meenen (Maeyken Eghels) 4 September 1562; and Beetken van Brugh (Betken Laureys) 13 November 1562.
