Heinrich Banman was born 19 April 1843, in Alexanderwohl, Molotschna Mennonite colony, South Russia, the son of Franz B. and Elizabeth Dalke Banman, both born in the Molotschna. Heinrich was the third child of four. When Heinrich was 14 years old his teacher persuaded the parents to send him to school for three more years to be trained as a teacher. At the age of 20 he began to teach the village school of Hamberg, which he taught for 12 years. On 12 June 1861, he was baptized by Elder Peter Wedel and was received into the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church. In 1863 he was married to Helena Buller; this marriage was blessed with nine children, six sons and three daughters. In 1874, at the time of the Mennonite emigration to America, the Banmans too joined the emigrants. For several years he served the Alexanderwohl Mennonite (General Conference Mennonite) Church in Kansas as song leader. In 1884 this church ordained him as minister, in which capacity he served for 40 years. At the death of Elder Peter Balzer he was given the leadership of the church; in 1910 he was elected as elder and served five years. He took an active part in the founding of the Bethesda Hospital and acted as chairman and secretary for 27 years. For 23 years he was the editor of the Bethesda Herald. He served on the Western District Conference committee of itinerant ministers (Reiseprediger) for 23 years and traveled extensively for the conference. A member of the founding group of Bethel College, he served on the college board of directors for 25 years. He died 21 March 1933 at the age of 89 years and was laid to rest in the Alexanderwohl church cemetery.
