Baltasar de Rosieres (d. 1569)

Baltasar de Rosieres (Rogiers, Rogieris), an Anabaptist martyr, burned at the stake on the "Big Market" at Antwerp on 2 April 1569 with Jan de Timmerman and Jan van Ackeren. He was born at Doornik (Tournai) in Flanders, was 21 years of age, unmarried and a weaver by trade. He was seized with many others during a meeting of the Antwerp congregation early in February 1569, at the house of Jan Poote. At his trial he said that he regarded infant baptism as a human institution. He had been rebaptized six months before, but in spite of repeated and extraordinarily painful torture refused to state the name of the person who baptized him or to betray any information concerning the congregation.
