Augusta County (Virginia, USA)
Augusta County was established in 1738 when it and Frederick County were formed out of a part of Orange County, which included at that time the entire Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. As originally constituted Augusta County included what is now Shenandoah, Rockingham and Page counties, which were formed in 1745, 1777 and 1831 respectively. These are all counties in which Mennonites first settled when they came to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Therefore Augusta County is the custodian of many of the early records of these settlements. Augusta County is also important for the history of a thriving Mennonite settlement within its present limits.
