Arend (Arends) family
The family name Arend, Arends, and other variations, was found in Mennonite comunities in the Netherlands and in West Prussia. It was derived from the first name Arend.
In the Netherlands the Arends family lived at Drachten, Friesland, since the 17th century. Arend Tjeers was a preacher of the Drachten congregation 1772-89, as were his sons Sybolt Arends 1780?-1808 and Tjalling Arends 1789-1805. Some members of this family adopted the family name of Arends and others Frieswijk.
The Arend family was rare and was found among the Mennonites in the Frisian congregations of West Prussia. In West Prussia four families of this name were counted in 1776 (without Danzig). The only Arend family to move to Russia was that of Hermann Arend, who immigrated to the Chortitza colony in 1789.
