Arbenz, Emil (1848-1917)

Emil Arbenz, a professor in St. Gall, in 1886 published a booklet, Aus dem Briefwechsel Vadians, in which he lists 25 letters written by Conrad Grebel to Vadian in the years 1518 to 1525. Even more valuable is his publication of the entire text of the correspondence of Vadian in the original language, Vadianische Briefsammlung der Stadtbibliothek St. Gallen I-VII (Jahresbericht des historischen Vereins in St. Gallen 1888-1913). These letters—most of them in Latin, a few in German—offer valuable source material for the study of the rise of the Anabaptist movement in Zürich and particularly of the career of Conrad Grebel, by presenting his gradual development as leader of the Anabaptist movement. They include 56 letters from Grebel to Vadian, and two from others to Grebel.
