Anthonis van Cassele (d. 1559)
Anthonis van Cassele (also called Antheunis van Hellegoete or Anthonis van Gent) was a cloth-shearer who was burned as a martyr on 5 July 1559. On the first Friday after Pentecost the following persons were taken prisoner in this town: Pieter Coerten, Kaerle Tancreet, Anthonis van Cassele, Hans de Vette, Proentgen, the wife of Kaerle, Jacob Spillebout, Abraham Tancreet, Maeyken Floris, Marcus de Smet, Hans de Smet, Maritgen (also called Miertgen or Mijntgen), the wife of Hans de Vette, and Tanneken, wife of Hans de Smet. All remained faithful and were burned at Ghent. On 5 July 1559 the first four mentioned, then on 7 August the next six persons, finally on 27 June 1560 the last two women mentioned were burned. There are two songs about these martyrs, namely, "Een liedeken van XII Vrienden van Gent" (Liedtboecxken van den Offer des Heeren, No. 14) and another song that begins with the words, "Een eeuwighe vruecht die niet en vergaat," found in Veelderhande Liedekens (1569).
