David Abram Hausknecht: minister and conference leader; born 30 May 1898 in Halbstadt, Molotschna Mennonite Settlement, South Russia. He was the son of Abram D. Hausknecht (23 January 1858, Gnadenfeld, Molotschna, South Russia – 19 January 1938, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) and Elisabeth (Lange) Hausknecht (7 August 1868, Tempelhof Colony, Caucasus, South Russia – 26 September 1948, Winnipeg, Manitoba). David married Berta Wiebe (27 July 1905, Borisoff, Russia – 5 January 1990, Langley, British Columbia), daughter of Abram A. Wiebe (1872-1944) and Agnes (Schroeder) Wiebe (1872-1928) on 19 August 1928 in Niverville, Manitoba. They had six children: Victor, Kay, Walter, Helen, Sigrid, and Ted. David died on 27 February 1986 in Langley, British Columbia.

David had several teachers in his family background, both on his father’s and mother’s sides of the family. David’s father was a medical doctor. After public school he attended a Gymnasium in Simferopol, Crimea.

In 1926 the Hausknecht family immigrated to Canada, settling in Niverville, Manitoba. David was baptized in the Niverville Mennonite Church on 10 June 1928 and in 1930 he was elected as a minister in this congregation.

In 1933 David and Berta moved to Greendale where David was called upon to serve in the First Mennonite Church. He was ordained as a minister on 28 July 1935 and was leader of the congregation from 1936 to 1938 and 1939 to 1945. For one year (1938-1939) he taught at the Menno Bible Institute in Didsbury, Alberta. Hausknecht served as chairman of the Mennonite Church provincial convention in 1938 and from 1941 to 1944 and served an important leadership role in the early years of what is now Mennonite Church British Columbia.

In 1947 the Hausknechts moved to Cloverdale, BC and later became members of the Coghlan (later Bethel) Mennonite Church. Hausknecht ceased his ministry work at that time.
