Albert Knapp, a German Protestant theologian educated at the theological seminary at Maulbronn and the University of Tübingen, in 1820 was made vicar in Feuerbach, where his contacts with Ludwig Hofacker produced a deep change in him. As pastor at Kirchheim unter Teck he published the Christoterpe, a yearbook, 1833-1853. In 1836 he became a pastor in Stuttgart, where he died on 18 June 1864. He is known as a writer of church songs. His Evangelischer Liederschatz für Kirche und Haus (1837), which was found in many Mennonite homes, contains 3,590 hymns, 1,200 of which he wrote himself. Johannes Molenaar secured his aid as a collaborator on the Gesangbuch zum gottesdienstliehen und häuslichen Gebrauch in Evangelischen Mennoniten-Gemeinden (Worms, 1854). He wrote three songs especially for this book; it contains in addition 24 others of his hymns. Of these, 20 were kept in the 1910 revision, and a new one adopted. His Christliche Gedichte (Basel, 1829) and Herbstblüte (Stuttgart, 1859) were also familiar in the South German homes. Thus through his hymns he exerted a lasting influence on the Mennonites of South Germany.
