McCammon, Don (1920-1988)
Don McCammon was born 7 July 1920 at Ames, Iowa, to Benjamin and Wilma McCammon. He graduated from Goshen College in 1945 and married Dorothy Snapp on 1 September of that year. The McCammons served as missionaries in China under the Mennonite Board of Missions (Mennonite Church, 19471951). In January 1951 Don, who had been arrested a few days previously, was tried by a "people's" court, threatened with execution, and then expelled. Six months later Dorothy and their newborn daughter, Julia, were also allowed to leave the People's Republic of China.
From 1952 to 1958 the McCammons served as missionaries to Japan, and then Don worked as an administrator at the Mennonite Board of Missions headquarters in Elkhart, IN. (1960-1966). In 1966 Don began working as administrator of the Goshen College bookstore where he remained until his retirement in 1986. During his abbreviated retirement Don devoted much of his time to Mennonite voluntary service and disaster relief assignments.
Don and Dorothy also had a son Michael who preceded Don in death, and a grandson Michael who died earlier. Don died 11 October 1988 in Omaha, NE.
