Friesen, Cornelius P. (1844-1899)
Cornelius P. Friesen was the first Mennonite village school teacher in Blumenort, Manitoba. Cornelius was born on 18 May 1844 in the village of Rosenort, Molotschna Colony, South Russia to Klaas Friesen (1793-1871) and Karolina Plett (1823-1887). In 1870 he married Agatha T. Klassen (1848-1902) and they settled in Blumenhof, part of the Borosenko Colony, where Cornelius earned his way as a carpenter making furniture. Together, he and Agatha had seven children. In 1874 Cornelius and his family joined the Mennonite migration from Russia to Canada. There they settled in Blumenort, Manitoba. Cornelius was known to have had a good education in Russia, for this reason he was appointed teacher in the new settlement.
Cornelius P. Friesen taught from 1874 to 1890 at which time he took a one year leave to upgrade his teaching qualifications at Gretna. He then returned and continued to teach until 1894. In addition to teaching, Cornelius was also a full-time farmer at which he was moderately successful. His skills as a carpenter were put to good use in building his own house and furnishing his classroom. Cornelius was known to be gifted in the art of Fraktur and was a collector of writings. He had an extensive personal library. In the classroom Cornelius placed special emphasis on art and church history. He was remembered by students as being a deeply religious man and a gentle disciplinarian. Cornelius P. Friesen died on 8 August 1899 after a short illness.
