Wouter Denys, an Anabaptist martyr, who was seized at Meenen in Belgium with five companions and after cruel torture burned at the stake in Courtrai on 30 April 1569. "With metal cut from a coin and with ink made of chalk" he wrote several letters, three of which are given in the Martyrs' Mirror. The first was written to his wife, admonishing her to walk in the fear of the Lord and to seek her salvation more earnestly than heretofore; the third letter, more general in character, requested the intercession of friends for the prisoners. He was a native of Courtrai (Kortrijk) and had been (re)baptized in 1569.
