Vologda Oblast (Russia)
Vologda Oblast, located in north central European Soviet Russia, consists of 145,700 km² and a population of 1,269,568 in 2002. The region consists of many marshes, lakes, streams, and extensive forests, and has long winters and poor soil. The chief towns are Vologda, the capital, Cherepovets, and Veliki Ustyug. Because of the many forests and the severe winters, which make settlement in the region unpopular, this territory has been used extensively for exile by the Soviets. Thousands of Mennonites were exiled to this region 1925-1940 and many perished. During the last years some moved from here to warmer climates.
