Sprunger name
Sprunger, a Mennonite family name, the origin of which is not known. Records show that in the 18th century families by the name of Sprunger were citizens of Sarmenstorf in Aargau, and Oberwangen in Thurgau, Switzerland. The Mennonite Sprungers in America trace their ancestry to the Thurgau branch, though when asked they invariably say their forebears came from the canton of Bern. During the religious persecutions one Jacob Sprunger fled from the canton of Thurgau about 1741 and found haven on the Jura Mountains. Jacob had one son, Peter, and three daughters. Though Peter was confirmed in the Reformed Church he eventually joined the Mennonite Church, where later he was elected to the ministry. Peter had four sons and two daughters. In 1852 a group of some 70 left the Jura region and came to America. Most of them were of this Peter Sprunger family and its relation by marriage. It was this group of Sprungers that formed the nucleus of the Mennonite community in Berne, Indiana. Some 35 years later S. F. Sprunger (grandson of Peter), wishing to acquaint Peter's descendants with their ancestry, with the help of his cousin Abraham J. Sprunger compiled and edited a genealogy, Geschlechts- und Namen-Register der Familie Sprunger (Berne, 1890).
