Loewen, David (1836-1915)
David Loewen: successful farmer and businessman; born on 24 April 1836 in Lindenau, Molotschna Colony, Russia, to Isaak and Margaretha (Wiens) Loewen as the youngest of 15 children. He was married to Anna (Reimer) Loewen (1835-1901) in 1855 in Muntau, Molotschna. The couple had 11 children together, three of whom died.
When David Loewen’s father, Kleinegemeinde deacon, retired in 1861, he took over the family farm in Lindenau. Some time later, the young family moved to Hochfeld near Nikopol. In June 1875, the Loewen family left Russia and came to Canada where they settled in the village of Hochstadt in the Manitoba Mennonite East Reserve.
David Loewen was elected by his community to serve as the Waisenvorsteher, an administrator in charge of caring for orphans, for both the Kleinegemeinde and the Holdeman church, which he later joined. He was also part of a committee organized to send money and supplies to impoverished Mennonites in Russia.
In addition to farming in a big way, David Loewen also owned and operated a threshing outfit and a sawmill. He was very prosperous in the lumber business and farming, so much so that he had one of the highest property assessments in the area, with his grain, cattle and other livestock. In 1902 together with another farmer, he traveled back to Russia to visit friends and relatives.
David Loewen died at his youngest daughter’s home near Hillsboro, Kansas on 7 June 1915.
