Hamelmann, Hermann (1525-1595)
Herman Hamelmann (1525-95), Lutheran superintendent at Oldenburg, Germany, after serving for a time as Catholic priest in the church of St. Servatius in Münster, and later as a Lutheran clergyman at Lemgo. He wrote the book, Ecclesiasticae historiae de renato evangelio et motu postea incepto in urbe Monasteriensi explicatio brevis, sed integra. This book offers important data, not given anywhere else, and collected with great care, and is thus an important source for the history of the Anabaptists in Münster. But because Hamelmann assembled the material uncritically, without inquiry into its authenticity, he is not entirely dependable. At any rate his statements should be accepted with caution. This was convincingly demonstrated by C. A. Cornelius in the introduction to his book, Die Geschichtsquellen des Bistums Münster. Münster, 1853. Also F. O. zur Linden agrees that Hamelmann's presentation of the origin of Anabaptism in East Frieslandis incorrect.
