A group of Habesha (Ethiopian and Eritrean people) began meeting in homes in Ottawa, Ontario in October 2005. When seeking a larger location for worship, a member with connections to the Meserete Kristos Church (Mennonite Church in Ethiopia) suggested contacting the Ottawa Mennonite Church. They were warmly welcomed and worshiped there on Sunday afternoons for a time. Later they rented a church facility located closer to the areas of the city in which most of the members lived. The worship service is held in Amharic, the Sunday school for children is in English. Approximately 50 persons actively participate, half of whom are children. The congregation formally affiliated with Mennonite Church Eastern Canada as an emerging congregation in April 2009.
