Santfirderrijp (Santvoorderrijp), a hamlet in the Dutch province of Friesland, where Elder Leenaert Bouwens baptized 17 persons in 1554-56 and another 16 in 1563-65. From this time a Mennonite congregation existed here, of which however there is only scarce information. T. H. Siemelink has surmised that during the period of persecution Santfirderrijp, surrounded by lakes and pools, was the meeting place of the Workum Mennonite congregation, and that the martyr Claesken, executed in 1554, who is said to have been baptized "near Workum in the fields," received her baptism here about 1549. But this could not be proved. In any case, besides the Workum congregation there was an independent congregation at Santfirderrijp in the 17th century. In 1695 this congregation, then numbering 24 baptized members, joined the Sociëteit (conference) of Mennonite churches in Friesland. In 1726 it contributed ten guilders to the Dutch Committee of Foreign Needs for the relief of the Mennonites in the Palatinate. During the early 18th century Douwe Djurres was its preacher, serving until about 1750 (his son Djurre Douwes was a preacher of the congregation at Koudum, Friesland, 1741-78). Soon after, at least before 1765, the congregation of Santfirderrijp died out; the few remaining members joined the Workum congregation. Probably Elder Hoyte Riencx, who was also called Hoyte Renix Santvoort, came from here.
