Block, Abram J. (1877-1956)
Abram Block: lay minister; b. 2 October 1877 in the village of Chortitza, Chortitza Colony, Russia. He was the seventh of 10 children born to Johann P. Block (25 September 1837-20 August 1896) and Maria (Klassen) Block (4 April 1841-4 January 1931). Abram was baptized 19 May 1898 and married Maria Krahn (14 December 1881-18 November 1917) on 7 June 1903. Abram and Maria had eight children, with three of those eight dying in infancy. Abram remarried Anna Dyck nee Penner (b. 4 April 1883) on 26 June 1918. She had an eight-year old daughter from her previous marriage. Abram died 23 October 1956 in Waldheim, Saskatchewan.
Abram and Maria moved to Alexandrowka, Barnaul Settlement, Siberia in 1908 where they farmed. In 1927 the family immigrated to Canada, settling in Dundurn, Saskatchewan. They soon moved on to a farm in the Macklin area of Saskatchewan, where he ministered in the local church and was ordained to the ministry. In 1933 the family moved to Waldheim.
In 1944 Abram and his family moved to Sardis, British Columbia where he served as a lay minister in the Greendale First Mennonite Church from 1946 until 1956. By 1956 his health began to decline and he moved back to Waldheim, Saskatchewan to be with his children.
