Voth, Catherine (1878-1926)
Catherine Voth was born 2 October 1878 near Inman, Kansas, to Cornelius and Cornelia (Heidebrecht) Voth. Early in life she showed unusual poise, dignity of character, and powers of concentration. She was a very able student. In 1897 she confessed faith in Christ, joining and remaining a life-long member of the Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church near Inman.
Her love of God and people led her into the nursing career for which she showed great ability. It also led her to become one of the first three Mennonite deaconessesin North America (1908). She was soon given major responsibility at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton, Kansas, becoming the first director of the new Nurses Training School, including supervision of operating room, laboratory, and X-ray procedures.
In 1912 she helped found the Kansas Nurses Association, of which she served as president (1916-1919). From 1915 to the time of her death on 19 August 1926 she was a member of the Kansas State Board for the Examination and Registration of Nurses. She was also a member of the board of directors of the American Nurses' Association. Her life motto was Psalm 37:4-5.
