In the early 17th century Mennonite farmers in the Tiegenhof area drew up a "Brandordnung" for mutual aid in case of fire. This arrangement was permitted by the burgomasters of Danzig in 1622. In the next year the Tiegenhöfer Feuerversicherung was founded at Tiegenhagen. It existed until the Mennonites in the Prussian area were expelled from their farms in 1945, and was the model of the Mennonite fire insurance companies in Russia.
