Selden Amish Mennonite Church (Selden, Kansas, USA)
Selden Amish Mennonite Church, now extinct, was a member of the Western Amish Mennonite Conference (Mennonite Church). Selden is in northwest Kansas in Sheridan County, but the settlement is sometimes known as the Decatur County congregation because many of its members lived in that county, which adjoins Sheridan. The first settlers came from Illinois before 1887, when the congregation was organized. The meetinghouse was built in 1888-89. A. B. Kolb after a western trip wrote in November 1891 concerning Selden, "There are some 12 or 15 families here. I think they are nearly all Amish." The highest membership, about 100, was reached in 1897. By 1905 it had dropped to 20. Amnion E. Stoltzfus served as minister 1897-1910. The drought was the chief factor in its becoming extinct. It was last listed in the 1918 Year-Book, with 22 members and C. C. Steckley as minister. The cemetery at the site of the former church still exists.
