Een liedeken van XLI vrienden binnen Gent gedoot tusschen tjaar LXII ende LXIX, is an old martyr song, beginning "Als men schreef duyst vijfhondert Jaer/ ende tweeentsestich mede/ sachmen te Gent dits openbaer/ vrome Christenen ontleden." The song is included in the Liedtboecxken van den Offer des Heeren of 1578 (second edition of this year) and following editions. It is reprinted in BRN II, 649-54. Between a devotional preface and epilogue the 41 martyrs are briefly mentioned. The names were collected from various sources; they were copied by van Braght in the Martyrs' Mirror. Occasionally mistakes were made both in the names and the years of martyrdom, as has been proved by A. L. E. Verheyden's study of the sources.
