Christian Hoover was born near Pleasant Hall in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was ordained a bishop in the River Brethren Church in 1834. About 1857 Christian separated from the main body of River Brethren (Brethren in Christ) and helped organize the Lower District Old Order River Brethren congregation in Franklin County. He was the son of Heinrich and Maria (Wenger) Hoover. He married Christena Oberholser (1798-1840) and had ten children. One of Christian's sons, John (1819-1886), became a bishop in the Upper District Old Order River Brethren congregation in Franklin County. A large percentage of members among the Franklin County Old Order River Brethren are descended from Christian Hoover.
