Congregación Menonita Shalom (New Columbia, Pennsylvania, USA)
The Congregación Menonita Shalom in New Columbia, Pennsylvania, began in 2002 as a Hispanic outreach by the Community Mennonite Fellowship in Milton, Pennsylvania. The group met for three years in Community Mennonite's building before it purchased a former Evangelical Association, and later Lutheran, church building in New Columbia and continued as Congregación Menonita Shalom. The brick building was originally constructed in 1843.
The congregation faced a crisis when its founding leader was charged in 2009 with indecent assault of male minors in his congregation. He disappeared and was later determined to have committed suicide.
Congregación Menonita Shalom has planted daughter churches: Congregación Menonita Nueva Canción in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, and Iglesia Menonita El Shadai in Reading. The church also established an internet radio station. In 2015, the congregation purchased Hotel Milton with a vision to develop a Community Center House of Refuge to provide services for immigrants, including medical, food, and clothing resources.
