Providence Mennonite Church (Montgomery, Indiana, USA)
The Berea Mennonite Church in Cannelburg, Indiana, established a mission outpost in Washington, Indiana, in 1953. Berea purchased a storefront on 16th Street, and after some remodeling held services there beginning on 26 March 1953. Tobias Slabaugh served as the first pastor of the Providence Mennonite Church.
The church was organized as an independent congregation on 5 March 1961 and became part of the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference of the Mennonite Church (MC).
In 1968, when the Washington facility was too small, the congregation purchased nearly seven acres west of Montgomery, Indiana, on Highway 50. The first service in the new building took place on 19 April 1970.
In February 2008, the Providence Mennonite Church withdrew from the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference and joined the Conservative Mennonite Conference. Its reasons for withdrawal cited the conference's liberal nature going back to the 1980s, including women in ministry and lack of aggressive action taken on the homosexual issue.
Providence Mennonite Church had a major building project in 2015-2016.
