Karel Tankreet (d. 1559)
Karel (Kaerle) Tankreet (Tancreet, Tanghereet), an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake on 5 July 1559 on the Vrijdagsmarkt at Ghent, Belgium, with three other martyrs, while a number of others, including Proentgen, the wife of Karel Tankreet, were executed on 7 August. All these martyrs, who had been arrested on Friday after Pentecost of 1559, have been celebrated in a hymn, "Ick moet een liet beginnen" (I must begin a song), which is found as No. 14 in the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren of 1563. Karel Tankreet originally was from Nijpkerke (Nieukerke) in Flanders; by trade he was a cobbler.
