Fort Garry Evangelical Mennonite Church (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada)
The Fort Garry congregation began services and formally organized in 1976. The first building was occupied in 1977, with a subsequent building program in 1984. Allan Friesen is considered the founding leader of the group. The congregation originated through urbanization from southern Manitoba.
Located a block south of the University of Manitoba, the congregation has many connections with, and a long history of reaching out to, faculty and students of the University. Many international students participate in weekly ESL classes (10 per week being offered in 2016), and a number have come to faith, been baptized, and become an integral part of the congregation.
Pastor Layton Friesen served from 2002-2012 as congregational leader. Pastor David Funk began serving in that role in 2014. Irma Janzen served as an associate pastor with a focus on pastoral care for about 25 years, retiring in 2015. Len Harms serves as the associate pastor for young adults and university ministry, and Andrew Krahn serves as the associate pastor for youth ministry. In 1985 there were 72 members; in 1995, 194; in 2000, 210. Average attendance in 2016 was 210 during the non-summer months. The congregation has been affiliated with the Evangelical Mennonite Conference since 1977. The language of worship is English.
